CERN Accelerating science


The mandate of the MME group is to provide to the CERN community specific engineering solutions combining mechanical design, fabrication and material sciences.

Historically the group maintains and develops the know-how on the mechanical construction of beam accelerator components and physics detectors. MME involves a large spectrum of highly specialized activities, including on-site facilities and sub-contracting: CAD design, advanced calculations, high precision CNC machining, sheet metal forming, welding and vacuum brazing, dynamic and static measurements, micrometric 3D metrology, metallurgical analysis, destructive and non-destructive material testing.

The group integrates a mix of resources: staff, fellows, students, associates and industrial contractors. Support is ensured for a wide range of requests: prototyping and feasibility developments, multi-activity and large scale projects combining its on-site facilities and sub-contracting, expertise consultancies, workshop and field interventions, consolidation and upgrade work including on lightly radioactive items, equipment maintenance and urgent demands.

While being most effective with an integrated approach starting at the conceptual stage, MME provides its support also for single activities. MME is capable of responding rapidly and professionally to complex demands in close collaboration with other CERN groups.
